Over the years, I’ve tried several solutions to keep my cameras on me while shooting, but the best setup I've found for a run-and-gun style workflow is the Coiro Dual Camera Strap, paired with a camera cage. I’ve experimented with different systems, including Peak Design, but for my needs, I’ve found them lacking. Being less noticeable helps you capture more natural moments, which is key for any event, especially weddings.
Let’s dive into the Coiro strap itself. They offer three versions: skinny, regular, and padded. I highly recommend the padded version, especially if you’re using heavier lenses. The added padding helps relieve pressure from your shoulders and back, making it easier to wear for extended periods. I can confidently say that after a full wedding day, I don’t feel sore or fatigued from wearing it.
In terms of color options, the strap comes in black, tan, and brown, with a few additional colors to choose from. Personally, I’d go with one of the main three, as they’re more likely to match your attire, especially when you're working professionally. The leather feels premium, not cheap, and after two years of heavy use, it’s held up wonderfully—showing minimal wear and tear. It’s become an essential part of my workflow.
Aside from how it looks, the biggest reason I rely on this strap is the ability to blend in and capture candid moments. As a wedding videographer, one of the challenges is making sure the people you're filming don’t feel like they have to "perform" for the camera. If you stand out too much, people often become self-conscious, which can ruin those organic, natural moments. With the Coiro strap, I’m often mistaken for another photographer, so people tend to act more naturally around me. It allows me to move seamlessly through a crowd, quickly grab the shots I need, and leave without disrupting the flow of the event.
While gimbals, tripods, and monopods are great tools, they require more space and setup time. They also draw more attention, which I prefer to avoid during certain moments. With the Coiro strap, I can be agile and stealthy, capturing shots before anyone even knows I was there.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the design of the strap. The dual-camera system features two main attachment points, each with a primary clip and a secondary backup clip for extra security. I use all four attachment points and attach D-rings to each of my camera cages. I find placing the clips on the vertical side of the camera works best for ease of access.
Now, I know the Coiro strap is great on its own, but I pair it with a camera cage for additional functionality. While the cage is sold separately from the strap, I think it’s an important addition if you're shooting video professionally. The right cage will work seamlessly with your tripod or gimbal, allowing you to quickly switch between setups. I’ve always liked the look and feel of Tilta camera cages, although I’ll admit, some of their parts can be hard to find. For example, I once lost a tiny screw from the Tilta handle, and when I reached out to get a replacement, I was told it would cost $10 for the part—but after factoring in duties, taxes, and shipping from China, it would end up costing $60. Something to keep in mind.
Tilta offers both half cages and full cages, and personally, I prefer the half cage for its lighter, more ergonomic feel. It still allows me to hold the camera like I would without a cage, but provides additional mounting points and protection. I’m not a fan of the full cage design as it blocks some of the buttons on the camera, though I’m not sure if this design is still available. If you’re looking for another option, SmallRig’s Black Mamba cage comes highly recommended. I haven’t used it myself, but many creators speak highly of it. Neewer also offers a budget-friendly option that’s worth considering if you’re looking to save.
One of the best features of these cages is that they come with a built-in base plate. This makes it incredibly easy to pop your camera on and off a tripod or gimbal without needing to attach or remove a separate plate every time. The base plate sits flush with the camera, unlike some proprietary plates like Peak Design’s, which can tilt the camera forward or make handheld shooting uncomfortable. I personally prefer this system because it’s faster and more versatile.
If you really want to stick with Peak Design, I’d recommend getting Arca-Swiss tripods and a special baseplate for your gimbal to make everything compatible with the Peak Design system. But for me, sticking with a simple, reliable base plate like the one built into Tilta and SmallRig cages just works better.
Now, I want to mention something important about Coiro that really impressed me. Not long ago, my camera strap broke—not the main part, but a small emergency clip that acts as a backup in case the main clip fails. While I could have still used the strap in an emergency, I rely on these small safety features because my cameras are expensive, and I take security seriously.
I contacted Coiro’s customer service, and they were incredibly helpful. They responded quickly and sent me a replacement part without hesitation. I wasn’t expecting such prompt service, but it showed me they stand behind their product. As a professional, good customer service means a lot, and it made me appreciate the brand even more. It's the kind of service that makes me feel confident recommending the strap.
If you're looking for a reliable, comfortable, and efficient solution for keeping your cameras close during a busy wedding or event, the Coiro Dual Camera Strap is hands down my top choice. It's discreet, looks professional, and allows me to move quickly and capture those priceless moments. Combined with a camera cage, it’s a setup that makes my workflow smoother and more efficient, whether I’m using a tripod, gimbal, or just working handheld.
