If the pandemic has taught me anything is that backyard weddings still have potential to be great and lavish without compromise.

Ottawa Backyard Wedding

Usually my thumbnail is a shot of the couple but there was something about the bridesmaids walking in the forest at this Ottawa backyard wedding that I just loved the look of. Jordann + Scott had a Ottawa backyard wedding but you would never be able to tell because the set up was amazing. From the hanging lights under the clear tent that had a clear view of the stars to the ceremony set up It really put things in perspective for me of what’s possible for a backyard wedding.

If the pandemic has taught me anything is that backyard weddings still have potential to be great and lavish without compromise. The interesting part about this short film is that Jordann and Scott didn’t want to do the part where they speak on camera which is a staple of what I do but I was up for the challenge. In the end I was able to use other audio from the vows, speeches and maid of honors letter reading that helped tell the couples story. Usually in these blogs I like to talk about challenges that I had filming the wedding. A random fun fact before Jordann and Scott first reached out I wasn’t sure if I would take a wedding on this date because it was the day after my brothers wedding but I woke up early that morning and made the 3hr drive from Peterborough and I’m glad I did. My phone actually lost reception driving threw the weird back roads but I made it. Thank you to a solid McDonalds Jr chicken meal and coffee for waking me up and making me feel complete that morning. I wasn’t all there (haha) but I was mentally prepared for the day and everything went smooth. This area was perfect for drone shots probably some of my favorite of the year. The sky was clear and the sunset was perfect for some drone shots and magic hour shots. The rustic colors just added to the whole vibe and I loved every minute of it.

My advice if you’re going to have a backyard wedding is to get a nice arch for the ceremony and have it during a time when the sun is not blaring. This well make sure you can enjoy your ceremony without feeling physically uncomfortable and also it helps to make sure that your guest are comfortable as well. Another nice touch is the place where you get your make up and hair done. If possible try to get it done in a room with natural lighting. This will help in more ways then you would imagine. This is great for photos and video to have a cleaner more natural looking image. However this will also help the make up artist in terms of creating a look that compliments the lighting that is present.

An outdoor wedding in your backyard can be whatever you want it to be, you just need to think outside the box (and maybe create a Pinterest board). Moving forward post pandemic wedding season I’m a big fan of the intimate backyard wedding movement and recommend people do a wedding like this to create a stress free environment with decor that you want.
